Scoliosis Q & A

What causes scoliosis?

Scoliosis refers to a curvature of the spine, which can range from mild to severe. It most commonly develops during adolescence as the spine is in a major growth phase. The underlying cause of most cases of scoliosis is not known, but researchers believe heredity plays a role. Some types of scoliosis can occur as a result of injury, birth defects, back surgery, osteoporosis or neuromuscular diseases and tumors. The curvature can occur from side to side or from front to back – or both, causing the spine to rotate on its axis.

How is scoliosis treated?

That depends on the severity. More severe cases of scoliosis in young people may require a brace to help the spine grow straight and correct the curvature as it develops. But many people have much milder forms of scoliosis, requiring monitoring to ensure the curvature doesn't become more pronounced.

How does chiropractic care help manage the symptoms of scoliosis?

Patients with more mild forms of scoliosis can still suffer symptoms like pain, aching and numbness as a result of impingements on nerves as they exit the spinal column. Routine chiropractic adjustments help relieve uneven strains and pressures that can pull the vertebrae (the spine bones) out of alignment so irritation on the nerves is reduced or eliminated. Chiropractic care also focuses on therapeutic exercises and gentle stretching techniques that can help strengthen the spine to avoid discomfort and maintain pain-free mobility. Plus, your chiropractor can recommend simple lifestyle changes like postural improvements that can help prevent symptoms and improve the strength of the back muscles. Because scoliosis can affect patients to different degrees and result in different symptoms, chiropractic care is customized for each patient's needs and is always preceded by a comprehensive evaluation of the spine to ensure the best care.
